The Fabrication Process...

Here is a brief outline of how a normal rectangular tank is built. This is for curiosity only and not meant to be a guideline for the hopeful do-it-yourselfer. Steps and techniques differ between tank shapes and designs. Paper is left on the tank except for around the areas to be joined. This protects from scratches and keeps the critical acrylic surfaces brand new until the owner removes it after receiving his/her tank.

Pieces for the body (vertical panels) are rough cut.

The cut pieces are machined to exact tolerances.

The body of the aquarium is bonded together.

The overflow(s) are built and bonded in.

The top and bottom of the aquarium are bonded on.

Background coloring, if applicable, is added. Accessible top edges are rounded over so leaning over the tank when cleaning does not cut into the chest. Access holes are also beveled to eliminate sharp edges. Any vertical corners, if applicable, are rounded over. Appropriate holes are drilled. Edges are polished. Tank is cleaned up and is finished.
